If I were a betting man, I would have put my money for Feufollet at the top of the list for the Grammy nominees for 2009. Their CD, without any doubt, was the best CD produced and released in 2009 from any Louisiana artist. . For the first year, I am very proud of the nominees, but as there are only five slots, there can be only five nominees and it is the musicians and producers from outside Louisiana who vote and decide.
Feufollet's latest CD is the most awesome album to be released in Louisiana in our genre. When you listen, you hear a bunch of young guys and a girl who have been influenced by all kinds of music and are not afraid to mix it with their Cajun roots and kick ass. It is hard for any Cajun band to make something NEW in this day and age where people are constantly trying to define "What is Cajun?," "Is that Cajun?," and "If a Cajun makes spaghetti, is it Cajun food?" It is the genius young musicians like Cedric Watson and Feufollet and Steve Riley that are pumping electric blood through the veins of an otherwise narrow-sighted, closed-minded view of Louisiana music.
I'm sad that Feufollet wasn't a nominee this year. Had they been nominated, I feel that these nominees would give a more accurate picture of Cajun music (and Creole music) today. Congratulations to all nominees of '08 and '09. Uncle Mike, Steve, and Ced! Whoever wins the Gram, I'll be happy. No need to cringe before the announcement... Thanks to everyone who voted for keeping the Cajun/Zydeco Grammy in Louisiana.
